Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is a service and/or the practice of planning, implementing and revising websites for the purpose of attaining a high ranking on search engine results pages (SERPs), such as those of Google, Bing or Yahoo. The primary goal of SEO is to maintain and/or increase the number of visitors to specific web pages and ultimately the entire website.

The scope of SEO services has grown in recent years and now includes focusing on everything from content (including such things as relevancy and correct spelling) and linking strategies of a website, to the user experience (design, layout and overall functionality), and technical details such as the speed of the website, proper coding and semantics.

The premise of SEO is that when a link to a website appears earlier (or “higher”) on search results pages, it is more likely to be noticed and followed by the individual performing the search. As such, if one can increase the likelihood of appearing earlier in search results, they also can increase the amount of traffic to their website.

Typically, SEO services are offered by internet marketing companies and as an integrated or individual service provided by web development companies, web content writers, or freelancers whose primary or only service offering is SEO.
